據外媒報道，美國紐約市自7月1日起禁用發泡餐具，政府給予餐館半年的過渡期。
本次遭禁用的發泡餐具（Styrofoam）包括單次使用的杯、碗、盤、外賣容器和托盤等，以及使用聚苯乙烯成分、用于包裝生鮮魚肉類的發泡餐具。
發泡餐具是由聚苯乙烯（Polystyrene , PS）加入發泡劑后，加熱制成的一種輕材質，被廣泛使用在餐飲及外賣行業容器。
紐約市目前1年大約要處理23000噸塑膠泡沫類物品或垃圾，并需花費大約3億1000萬美元掩埋300萬噸以上的垃圾。禁用發泡餐具后，市府建議業者及消費者可以使用包括紙、塑膠、鋁和可生物分解等成分的替代產品。
